Elie Saab, a Lebanese fashion designer celebrated worldwide for his ultra-feminine and flowing gowns, has dressed famous celebrities and members of royalty. He was born in Damour, a coastal suburb of Beirut, and began his foray into fashion by sewing at a young age, using fabric scraps to create dresses for his sister. Despite the challenges of the Lebanese civil war, which affected his family, Saab launched his label in Beirut at 18 years old, following a brief period at a Parisian design school.
Known for blending Western styles with Middle Eastern ornamental flair, Saab’s eveningwear has gained international acclaim, especially among brides-to-be and Middle Eastern royalty, including Queen Rania of Jordan. His breakthrough in Hollywood came when Halle Berry wore one of his designs to receive her Academy Award in 2002. Since then, Saab’s creations have been worn by numerous celebrities such as Beyoncé, Priyanka Chopra, Celine Dion, Angelina Jolie, and Gal Gadot. The latter’s choice sparked controversy due to the ongoing Israeli-Lebanese conflict.
Saab’s brand has become a household name in Beirut and globally. He served as a judge on the Middle Eastern edition of Project Runway in 2016. His expansion includes boutiques in major fashion cities like London, New York, and Paris, offering haute couture collections. His ready-to-wear lines and perfumes are available in over 160 locations worldwide, including prominent retailers.
